  • Ed Stafford became the first man to walk the length of the Amazon river in South America from the source to the sea. He walked for:

    860 days

He started on 2nd April 2008 and finished in August 2010. No-one had ever done what he attempted.

From Lari we headed up over the tops to get on the northen side of Mismi. We had ten days worth of food with us, which we had on a couple of tiny donkeys. These were owned by our guide, Feliciano, a tiny man who walked everywhere in his sandals made from recycled tractor tyres. [...]

First things first – there is no such thing as the source of the Amazon. There are hundreds of thousands of sources. What Luke and I were looking for was the furthest source from mouth of the Amazon. We knew from research that the furthest tributary is the “Queberada Carhuasanta” which springs from the 5600m [...]

Uñon is situated at the far north-west of the Colca Canyon and sits at 2700m above sea level. Its population is approximately 160 people and the only access there, currently, is a single track, which you can either walk or take a mule. Scattered all round Uñon are the remnants of Inca and pre-Inca settlements [...]

The route over to Canco was ridiculous. Once at the foot of the mountain we had to zig zag our way up an ever steeply increasing scree slope to the foot of some vertical crags. From the bottom we couldn’t see where the route would take us through there. We set off in the dark [...]

It’s been a little while since our last entry to which we apologise. However, it has been rather hectic. The story so far… From Aplao we headed up into the mountains to a tiny pueblo called Uñon. Situated at 2700m the only access to the town is via a tiny track you either walk or [...]

Luke and I have just received an email from the Transglobe Expedition Trust saying that we have been awarded a 2,000 pounds grant to be spent on the expedition. This is fantastic for us as we are eating like 10 men at the moment and after having climbed to 2,800m today to a village called [...]

We are in Aplao, the last proper town before we step into the Colca Canyon, situated at the northern end of the Majes River Valley.  This is a very wide, fertile valley fed by glaciers from the Andes. The walk and the terrain, on the whole has been relatively easy.  However, we´ve learnt (the hard way) [...]

Had to get this one in quickly. We’ve started. As in we went down to the beach early this morning, Ed in one moto-taxi and me and Oswaldo in another. We nearly got lost right from the start. We’ve walked 4km back into Camana where we intend to continue through the town into the hills. However, [...]

18 hours into the expedition and we’re….still in Camana! Now, there’s a perfectly good reason for this – we just wasn’t quite ready to leave yesterday (its 01.30 now, Wednesday 2nd April, as I write this). We had only obtained our 1:100,000 maps from Lima and have spent an entire day shopping for food etc [...]
